There are four areas of focus within Akeson Micro Inc.: systems integration, custom programming, accounting software, and internet services.

Systems Integration: Stephen Akeson started working with hardware/software integration during his doctoral work in clinical hematology at the UC Berkeley. Upon completion of his thesis in 1982, he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Roger Cooke at UC San Francisco, helping build some of the first computer-controlled laboratory instrumentation. Using software in the Forth language, a variety of instruments were connected to computers for data collection and analysis.
In this early period of PC development, manufacturers provided additional leads to other computer users attempting to build working systems, a referral system which led to many interesting integration projects. Akeson Micro Inc. currently builds, upgrades and/or repairs about 100 computers a year. We are experts in getting components from different manufacturers to work together, and in helping clients define their needs and implementing computer hardware and software to meet those needs.

Custom Programming: In addition to early ecological models in Fortran, Basic and APL, Stephen Akeson has written programs in Assembler, Pascal, Forth, dBase, C, Foxpro, Delphi, and Visual Foxpro. Custom programming projects have spanned the full range of business fields, from a complete automobile insurance database system, to an interface to telephone switch equipment for call accounting, to modifications of the general ledger accounting for a multinational bank to track and age intra-branch transfers.

Commercial products written by Stephen Akeson currently in distribution include an interface between Timeslips Time and Billing software and Computer Associates ACCPAC Plus General Ledger, and an Auto Parts inventory lookup system. Custom programming often provides the "glue" that connects different pieces of software or hardware together to meet a specific client's needs.

Accounting software: Beginning in 1985 Stephen Akeson has been helping clients implement networked accounting software. Working with Computer Associates ACCPAC Plus, Stephen Akeson was trained as a consultant and developer, and authorized to license portions of their source code for customization. In partnership with a local ACCPAC Plus dealer, we have helped many firms implement, customize, and repair accounting systems.
Over the last 15 years our clients have included Samsung Computers, Atari Computers, Pasqua, Big Brothers Big Sisters, PG&E, and PacBell Airtouch. Most recently, Akeson Micro has upgraded several ACCPAC Plus systems to SBT Pro accounting, including custom programs in Foxpro to work with the SBT Pro. SBT Pro Accounting software is written in Microsoft Visual Foxpro 6.0 and has options for source code release for customization.

Internet Services: As the internet became the standard for electronic communication between computers in late 1990's, Stephen Akeson worked with his existing client base to adapt their business plans and to implement the new technology.
With the introduction of DSL in fall of 1999, many clients have moved to intranets, bring the internet to the desktop over existing ethernet networks. The most recent projects involve implementing Linux routers to act as firewalls, and the production of active server DCOM objects to work as database backends for processing web page requests.
